π Finding It Hard to Stay the Course? Youβre Not Alone. π
Let’s talk about the truth of R+ training with horses. Maybe someone told you:
Spoiler alert: most of them are. And while some of this may be true, I’m here to tell you something important—what you’re feeling might actually be a normal part of the learning curve.
If you’re out there doing this on your own without guidance or mentorship, it’s not surprising that it feels hard sometimes. You’re not alone in doubting yourself or the process. We’ve ALL been there. Even those of us who have been doing this for years—and have seen firsthand the amazing, life-changing results—experience doubt occasionally.
Here’s the thing: just because it’s uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or challenging doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. The juice is 100% worth the squeeze.
Why? Because:
I’ve seen reliable results.
I’ve witnessed relationships transform.
Horses’ and humans’ lives have been saved—literally and emotionally.
From mundane moments to miraculous breakthroughs, it’s all possible with R+.
The truth is, R+ training isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving your horse something they value—a reason to say “YES” to your requests. Imagine if, as a child, your parents had responded to your “Why do I need to do X?” with “Because I said so.” That probably wasn’t very motivating, right? (drop a GIF in the comments if you can relate)
With reinforcement done correctly, it’s different. Your horse has a real reason to want to engage with you. And while learning any training method (clicker, traditional, etc.) can seem overwhelming without a clear path, it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Would you explore an unknown country, where you don’t speak the language, without a guide? Probably not. R+ can feel a bit like that without a mentor or support system—but when you have guidance, the journey becomes so much smoother.
So wherever you are in your process—creating connection, shaping behaviors, or just wanting mutual consent and joy between you and your horse—please don’t give up. In the long run, your horse (and your heart) will thank you.
Need some extra support or clarity?
Feel free to reach out if you’d like a mentor to help you navigate this journey. Whether you’re right on track and just need reassurance, are looking for some helpful hacks, or want a whole new perspective on your progress, I’d love to help.
Whatever the age and stage, horses and humans can enjoy growing together.
Remember, there are so many options to suit your situation—online or live, coaching or training at your farm or mine.
Sending positive vibes and encouragement your way!
Always in your corner,
Melissa
