Is Sending your Horse to a Trainer a Bad Idea?

Uncategorized Mar 05, 2025

Have Reservations about Sending Your Horses to Professional Trainers including those Who use Positive Reinforcement? Totally understandable. Sometimes it's the best thing ever and other times....well you've heard the stories. (this is first post in a series about myths and sending your horse to a trainer)

As horse owners, we know how deeply connected we are to our equine friends. The bond you share is unique and special, filled with moments of joy, challenge, and growth. But when it comes to considering sending your horse to a professional trainer, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as you want the best for your horse. You might worry about your horse’s well-being, the training methods used, or even what others might think. Such a valid way to feel.

❇️  Let’s take a moment to explore some myths surrounding professional training, particularly those that use positive reinforcement, and hopefully ease your concerns.

**Myth 1: Professional Trainers Only Use Harsh Methods**
One of the biggest fears many horse owners have is that professional trainers rely on harsh or punitive methods. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Many trainers today focus on compassionate training and positive reinforcement, which is all about encouraging and rewarding the behaviors you want to see. The reality is that your horse can learn in a loving, supportive environment away from home where the focus is on building trust and a joyful partnership. This approach can not only strengthen the bond between you and your horse, and create mutual understanding but it also fosters a willing spirit in your equine companion.

**Myth 2: Positive Reinforcement Isn't Effective for Serious Training and it creates cookie monsters**
You might worry that positive reinforcement is only for light or basic training. The truth is, it’s highly effective for serious training as well! Whether your passion is dressage, jumping, or simply enjoying trail rides, or connection that doesn't include riding, positive reinforcement can bring out the best in your horse even if you aren't all into R+. It allows for a deeper understanding and connection, paving the way for impressive skills and a more enjoyable riding experience.

Proper use of R+ creates focused horses who have high levels of confidence, respond to traditional cues and have great manners too, not the cookie monsters that a lot of people create when they are inexperienced with positive reinforcement or use too high value food.

**Myth 3: Professional Trainers Are Too Expensive**
Yes, hiring a professional trainer who is dedicated to compassionate training and treatment of horses comes with an expense, but think of it as an investment in your horse’s future. It’s not just about the money spent today; it’s about the time, energy, and heart you’ll save in the long run. A skilled R+ trainer can help prevent issues that might arise such as confusion and frustration with horses who are learning, ensuring your horse grows into a well-rounded friend, pet and/or partner. Plus, the peace of mind that comes with knowing your horse is in kind capable hands is priceless.

**Myth 4: Trainers Don't Customize Their Approach**
It’s easy to assume that trainers apply the same techniques to every horse, but the reality is quite different. Good trainers take the time to understand each horse’s unique personality, history, and needs. They create a personalized training plan that resonates with your horse’s natural instincts and they morph it as needed, helping them learn and thrive in a way that feels right for them. It’s a collaborative process that honors the individuality of both horse and owner. This is especially true with compassionate trainers who honor the horse's emotions and work with them to ensure the horse feels as confident and comfortable as possible.

**Myth 5: Sending a Horse to a Trainer Means Owners Are Incompetent or Uncaring**
There’s a misconception that seeking help from a professional trainer reflects poorly on your skills as a horse owner. In truth, it showcases your dedication to your horse’s growth and well-being. It takes courage to recognize when you might need support, and choosing to work with a trainer is a sign of strength and a desire to ensure the best for your beloved friend. 🩵

**The Benefits of Professional Training**
Choosing a professional trainer who uses positive reinforcement can open up a world of benefits for both you and your horse. These trainers can provide a safe, structured environment where your horse can learn and grow, addressing any behavioral issues with compassion and expertise. When both owner and trainer are willing to work together in the horses best interest (all ego's aside) the relationship between you, your horse, and the trainer can flourish, creating a nurturing space where everyone thrives.

In conclusion, sending your horse to a professional trainer, especially one who embraces compassionate horse training and positive reinforcement, is not just a practical decision; it’s a heartfelt commitment to fostering a joyful and rewarding journey for both of you and one you can feel good about especially when you and your trainer are able to collaborate honestly and openly.

Whether you train your horse or send it to someone, it's about creating an environment where your horse can learn, grow, and shine, all while strengthening the bond you share. Choosing a compassionate trainer or coach and methodology ensures that you can trust in this process and know that you’re doing what’s best for the equines in your life. 🐴

I hope this helps you better understand the facts and the emotions that often occur when we consider sending a horse for continuing education. It can be a life changing reset of horses and their humans - in a good way.
