So often, we get wrapped up in all we think we "should" do for them as a "good" horse owner, we end up overwhelmed with doing things "for and to our horses ". instead of BEING WITH them. It can be emotionally, physically and mentally exhausting for us and it's important to remember that they don't benefit when we have this energy either.🐴
Silence, time and space with our horses. It’s a rare moment in today’s world when our mind can just be still and we can be present when we are with them. No agenda. Just being lost in their world for a moment❤️
Soaking in the sound of horses munching, the warmth of their breathe on our skin, noticing the rise and fall of their rib cage, the expansion and contraction of their nostrils, the swish of the tail at a fly, the caress of a muzzle, the subtle shifts as them move – these are the things I notice, when I am choosing to be fully with them.
Of course, we don’t always have to choose. Sometimes we’re fortunate enough that these experiences just happen, and the rest of the world falls away, even if just for a moment.
Other times we can consciously make a decision to focus on sharing space and time with our horses - like the other day when I was sitting nearby watching horses at rest while they were standing up. I watched them struggle to give up being alert and let sleep take over. I was thinking, you're ok. I'm here standing watch. Just go to sleep when suddenly, the most fractious of them all came over and laid down as close as he could get to me without being in my lap. He carefully tucked his little legs underneath his body as not to hit me and then stretched his neck out until it almost touched the toe of my boot before he settled in for a snooze. Such a gift that was. ❤️
Whether we find ourselves fully aware and in the moment when in our horse's presence, by accident or choose to make it so, these are the moments horse lovers live for…at least I do. And I believe it is in these moments that true understanding of our horses and ourselves occurs.
Clarity, confidence and consensual connection often begin during insightful moments such as these. And I hope that you take the time and space to make many of them.
My wish for you all: May you create the time, space and silence to enjoy BEING fully present with your horse today. And afterward, maybe you can even take another few moments to reflect on what occurred.🌇
